About me, my mission, and Expert Practice

I am a coach for senior technical experts and subject matter experts who want to strengthen their influence without compromising their intellectual integrity. Expert Practice is not simply a business to me; it is an expression of what I believe about the role of expertise in shaping serious decisions. I founded Expert Practice after more than two decades working with highly skilled technical professionals, complex organisational systems, and senior leaders, and throughout that time, I have observed a consistent pattern in large institutions: deeply knowledgeable experts, equipped with rigorous thinking and strong evidence, often find that their influence does not match the weight of their expertise.

This gap is rarely about competence. It is usually about influence.

Specialised Coaching for Technical Experts

I provide specialised coaching for senior technical experts and subject matter experts working in large organisations. This is not traditional leadership coaching built around generic management frameworks. It is technical expert coaching focused specifically on influence, stakeholder engagement, and strategic impact.

My work equips experts with practical tools, methods, and techniques that strengthen their ability to:

  • Increase their executive influence without relying on positional authority

  • Translate complex analysis into persuasive clarity

  • Build stakeholder influence while maintaining intellectual integrity

  • Navigate organisational politics ethically and effectively

  • Strengthen their professional impact as technical leaders

Expertise in a Changing World

There are also broader societal shifts underway that compelled me to establish Expert Practice. We are living through a period in which expertise is both indispensable and increasingly challenged. Complex global problems—technological, scientific, environmental, and social—require real expertise. Yet public debate often elevates confidence, bias, and personal opinion above carefully developed expertise.

In social media, the distinction between informed subject matter expertise and unexamined assertion has become blurred. At the same time, many highly capable experts withdraw from visible influence, reluctant to engage in environments that reward simplification over substance. When technical experts and serious thinkers step back, the space does not remain neutral. It is filled with voices less constrained by facts.

Strengthening the influence of technical experts and subject matter experts is therefore not simply a professional development issue. It is part of restoring intellectual responsibility and evidence-based decision-making to the arenas where it matters most.

This is not a one-sided crusade. Often, experts themselves must undertake the uncomfortable work of understanding how their expertise is experienced by others and how their communication can be refined without sacrificing authenticity. At the same time, institutions must examine the cultures and incentives that determine whether expert judgment is genuinely leveraged.

Research and Foundations

My practice is grounded in more than two decades of experience and research into expertise, high performance, and organisational behaviour. I have partnered and worked extensively with the Expertship Institute, contributing to the development of the Expertship capability framework and assessment tools designed specifically for technical professionals and subject matter experts.

While this work is informed by data and academic research, it is fundamentally practical. The focus is on applied methods that increase influence for technical experts in the environments in which they work. My aim is to strengthen both individual capability and the broader standing of expertise itself.
